Experiment: Finding the Poles of a Magnet Using Metal Shavings

Materials:

  • A bar or horseshoe magnet

  • Iron/metal shavings

  • A sheet of paper

Steps:

  1. Place the magnet flat on the table.

  2. Put a sheet of paper over the magnet.

  3. Sprinkle metal shavings gently on top of the paper.

  4. Tap the paper lightly.

What to Observe:

  • The metal shavings gather more at the ends of the magnet.

  • These ends are the north and south poles of the magnet.

Conclusion:
The poles of a magnet are at the ends, where the magnetic force is strongest and attracts the most metal shavings.
