A 2 mm desoldering wick is a flat, braided copper wire used to remove solder from PCBs and components by absorbing molten solder through capillary action.
Key Features
- Width: 2 mm (good general-purpose size)
- Material: Oxygen-free copper braid
- Coating: Pre-fluxed (usually rosin flux)
- Action: Heats up and “wicks” solder into the braid
What it’s used for
- Cleaning solder off pads
- Removing excess solder
- Fixing solder bridges
- Component removal (IC pins, resistors, etc.)
2 mm is ideal for:
- Standard PCB work
- Through-hole pads
- Medium-sized SMD pads
How to use it properly
- Place the wick on the solder joint
- Press your soldering iron tip on top
- Wait 1–2 seconds for solder to melt
- The braid will absorb the solder
- Lift both together (don’t drag)
Tips for best results
- Add a little extra flux if needed (improves flow)
- Use a clean, hot iron (≈320–370 °C)
- Don’t hold too long — can lift PCB pads
- Cut off used (filled) section before re-using
