The applications for this simple voltage regulator are endless. A popular use is to derive lower, regulated voltages from the 13.8V DC supply in a motor car.

The maximum current available is 1.5A. If the regulator is to be used at or near this level, it is advisable to mount the regulator on a heatsink (aluminium +/- 25mm square).

All that is required is a rectified DC input roughly 2V more than the output voltage required, bearing in mind that the greater the difference between the input and output voltages, the greater the power for the IC to dissipate. The maximum input voltage for this circuit is 35V DC.

Minor modification to this circuit will enable its use as a simple but effective charging circuit for common lead-acid batteries, as used in on-board power systems for cars, motorcycles, boats caravans and numerous other electronic systems.

The kit uses the popular voltage regulator device, LM317T.
